Ok.... my vocabulary isn't very big, period. Some people use words for certain things which I know what they mean but I'd never think of using them. I was watching a show a few nights ago where this person was saying something and was using these bigger words to explain what he was saying. I forget what it was the person was saying, but when they were done, I thought the person could have said the same thing using about five small words.
One word that really get's to me is the word "floor". Nothing is wrong with this word, but.... what would you think if I said, "I was over at Joe's place and he passed out on the floor"? You would think that I was in Joe's house and Joe passed out, right? Wrong! We were outside when Joe passed out. See the problem with the word "floor"?
I hear to many people using the word floor instead of the correct word "ground". The ground is what it is, the ground, it's not a floor. There is one place that I can think of off hand where you could call the ground a floor, that would be inside of a cave being it has a ceiling, walls, and a floor.
I also wonder why the UK English can be so much different then the US English. The UK English drive me up a wall. A lot of words they use for things are just plain strange. For example, what we call the hood of a car they call a bonnet, we call the trunk they call a boot. To me a bonnet is what a woman will put on her head and a boot you put on your feet.
Or how about this word, "lolly" (spelling) which in the UK means what we would call a truck. There are a lot of words that are English used in the UK that have a different meaning here in the US.
The thing is, if we are going to speak English, lets all use the same words so we don't get so confused at what the other person is saying.
While I'm at it.... if anyone comes to the US to live, there should be a law that they have to speak US English correctly and say the words correctly. How many times have you called a place and get someone on the phone who is "trying" to speak English and you have no idea what they are saying because they are not pronouncing words correctly? I usually tell that person to put someone on the phone who can speak English else I'll just hang up on them.
