FLOODING Pt-1

FLOODING Pt-1

Ok, I haven't posted there for a while and you probably think I was just to damn lazy to post, maybe. But there was other things going on also. This past September we ended up getting flooded pretty good with a foot of water in the house. We lived here for around 35 years and had a number of floods but never in the house, this was a first. Past floods the basement will fill with water and the creek surrounds the house but never getting in the house.

Of course we know it was going to happen some day, the question was when. The last time water got into this house was way back in 1972 when hurricane Agnus hit, at that time there was about 5 feet of water in the house, so I'm told.

The funny thing about this flood was just a week or so before they said about flooding and we moved a lot of stuff up off the floor, just in case. Well nothing happened. The next time they said we wasn't going to get a lot of rain, like 2-3 inches and ended up with 8-inches in a very short amount of time, and that did it.

I'm sure when writing this I'm going to forget some stuff but I'll try to remember at least some of it.

When the creek which is about 50-60 yards away backs up into the ditch on the one side of the house, we know the creek is up pretty good. The ditch is between our house and the main road, there is a bank on the road side probably around 5-feet high, so the water can't go anywhere but into our yard. When the creek water starts coming around the other side of the house is when you really have to watch it. The water will flow into our neighbors yard and make a giant pond, and after his yard fills up, the water crosses our lane which at this point you better leave or get stuck here.

Once the water from one side of the house crosses the lane and meets the water on the other side of the house, the house is then surrounded by water and the only place for it to go is "up" until it gets high enough (5-feet) to cross over the road.

In the video below it shows the flood waters crossing the road, we are on the other side of the road from our house. The truck you see is our truck and the Jeep is our daughters who was staying with us at that time. As the first part of the video plays, the camera will pan to the left and our house is the last house seen. The flower boxes you see on the house are about 5 or more feet off the ground.

As the video continues, it shows the mud on the floors, and stuff scattered all over from both the flooding and us moving things.
